Erin walked into her dorm, carrying one bag and rolling another along behind her. Erin had many talents, but packing light was not one of them. She had argued over several items with her mother, and the remaining two (huge) bags were the result. Originally, Erin would have need three or four bags to carry everything. She did have to leave some necessary items at home, though. Erin would have to go shopping. That sure wouldn't be a problem, though. Erin spent quite a bit of time at the mall anyway, so buying a few things shouldn't be a problem.
Upon fully entering the room, Erin promptly dropped the large duffel bag she had been carrying. "Phew!" she sighed. Looking around, it was evident that her roommate was yet to arrive, seeing as the two bunk beds were empty and didn't have any blankets on them yet, just the white mattress cover, a white sheet, and a pillow with a white pillowcase. Erin would have to fix that. She had brought her favorite blanket, which was pink and black plaid flannel, and a pink pillow case. Claiming the top bunk while her roommate, who she had read on her letter was a sophomore named Arabella, was out, Erin put her blanket on it. It looked wrinkly. Perhaps if Erin hadn't picked the top bunk the sheets would have been neater, but no matter. Erin then replaced the boring white pillowcase with her pink one and proceeded to start unpacking her clothes. This could take a while.

Arabella slowly wandered through the empty corridors of the dormitory. Looking around her thin fingers lifted to press the white phantom mask closer to her face, making sure the horror underneath was hidden. She didn't carry anything besides a folder and an electric keyboard. The headphones clasped tightly to her head were playing the soft tune of Music of the Night and her gentle voice hummed along. The humming sounded closer to a pleasure purr but it wasn't noticable, she was alone in the hall. Stopping at a slick wooden door she read the number and paused. Erin Lily....wonder how she'll piss me off. Arabella grimaced at the rude remark and sighed. Be happier, it's more of how much we'll disagree.
Satisfied with her remark she opened the door and peered inside. Walking in slowly her heeled boots thudded dully against the floor, the hand holding the folder shifting to caress the wall gently as she walked by. Her gaze shone curiously as she looked at her roomate, unpacking two large bags of clothes seeming to take forever. Arabella was pleased to see Erin had already claimed the top bunk, good for her music so she wouldn't feel claustrophobic so close to the ceiling. Her skirt twirled around her as she moved for her own bunk. Placing the keyboard down gently she watched Erin for a moment then looked underneath her bed.
Three medium sized bags lay underneath. Arabella had snuck into the dorm previously and placed her bags there so she wouldn't have to carry much. Phantom popped out from under the bed and jumped up next to Arabella. Arabella turned the eyboard on and began to play a song she had composed herself over the summer break. It rang out beautifully and Arabella smiled triumphantly. "Another success." She pressed against the mask again and took out a sheet of paper from the folder, half of it was occupied by musical notes. Taking out a pencil she began to put down notes carefully, not bothering to consult the piano for the sound.

Erin looked up while she was unpacking a light blue blouse when she heard Arabella playing a tune on a keyboard. Erin was impressed. Arabella was quite a good piano player, and Erin didn't know the particular song she had been playing. Erin was a little jealous, but she tried not to let it take over. She didn't even know Arabella. She put away her last two tops in the dresser and shut it quietly, so not to disturb Arabella.
"What song was that?" Erin asked while Arabella was writing. Then it occurred to her that Arabella had probably written the song herself, hence why she now was writing notes on a page. How dumb can you get? she thought. Erin did want to leave a good first impression on Arabella, seeing as she was going to be stuck with her for nine months. "You were very good. Did you write it yourself?" Erin added, to illustrate that she was not as dumb as she seemed.

Arabella looked up and smiled pleasantly at Erin. "Yes I did. How interesting of you to notice, not to many people do. They all assume it's by someone else, as if I cannot write my own notes." She said the last part a tad coldly and shuffled though the various pages in her folder. "That particular sweet tune I wrote quickly. It isn't that good but then again it isn't a total horror. It's called D'étoiles et Allume which means of Stars and Light." Phantom looked up and mewed softly, getting up and stretching. Jumping to the floor he scurried under the bed and rustled around. Arabella tugged her bags from underneath her bunk and sifted through the smallest bag she had. It was full of music sheets and bubble wrap.
Taking out a thick large packing envelope she slid a rather large stack of paper out. There was a cover page with Sacrifice de la beauté printed at the top. It was the Opera she had written herself a year ago and she stared at the cover page, then turned her gaze to Erin. "Sacrifice de la beauté, meaning Beauty's Sacrifice. It's an opera....I wrote it myself some months ago I finished it finally." Many turned away when finding she was a composer, most not believeing her. She had gotten used to the denial of faith and didn't expect any different from Erin. Placing the opera gently on her bed she quickly unpacked her things, various elegant clothing and masks and pens and inkwells and sheet after sheet and folder after folder of music.
Her bag full of bubblewrap proved to be various statues and waterglobes all of the ame thing: The Phantom of the Opera. Each were of different people from different scens yes but the theme of her life was all but obvious now. Though middle-class she lived with elegance and grace with the disposition of the extremely wealthy. Though her dresser was then covered in cosmetics. She was nervous showing Erin all her cover up, and even more panicked about Erin seeing her face. She had quickly thrown her bedspread on her bunk, a black down comforter and silken crimson sheets. All of her things seemed elegantly from the 1800's and as she finished she sat upon her bunk.
Phantom jumped and curled upon her lap with a low purr and a flick of his tail. Arabella looked at Erin and gently stroked her mask. Could she stand to bare witness to this grotesque carcass? This horrid monster? Could she bare to stand to be in the same room as Arabella when the mask slipped? She would find out soon as the mask had to come off at some point. Sleeping with it on was an issue and wearing make up to bed an even bigger issue. She hoped not to dwell to much on it but couldn't help herself and she turned her gaze quickly from Erin.

Now Erin was really impressed. Writing was not her strong point. The plot always just ended up coming out wrong and Erin would end up running out of ideas and stopping, unless it was for school, naturally. But she hadn't been forced to write anything for school in a few years except five paragraph essays. Erin detested five paragraph essays, but at least they required almost no actual creativity. The only thing really hard Was trying to come up with a thesis statement. Who cared about a friggin' thesis statement anyway? Well, at least the structure made them hard to screw up, that was better than rising action, climax, and falling action.
Then Erin noticed that Arabella had a cat. This would be interesting. Erin's mother, you see, had an allergy to cats. Erin had never been around one long enough to really know if she did or not, though she doubted she did. Now Erin was going to be exposed to one for quite a bit of time. Well, she didn't mind having a cat in her dorm, so long as it was well behaved and went in the litter box, as most cats did. Erin reached down and petted Phantom before speaking to Arabella.
"Really? A whole opera?" Erin asked. She wasn't sure if Arabella was telling the truth, but she seemed to be the type who would rather spend her time doing that than hanging out at the mall or something, like what Erin would dedicate her free time to. So writing an opera, probably not a twelve hour one, probably, but perhaps a short one, was plausible. "What's it about?" Erin asked. This fascinated her.

Phantom purred loudy and closed his eyes. Arabella blinked rapidly for a moment, trying to fight the oncomming tears. This one opera had made her very sensitive, it was a deeply emotional moment for her once she finished it. "I-it's about a girl....who has a deformity on the right side of her face. She meets a boy and falls in love, but the boy doesn't know of her secret. In the end he finds out, but he accepts her for far more than her physical beauty." Her voice was strained and she didn't life her gaze from Phantom. It was her dream opera, the one she could star in because it was about her. What she had hoped for.
She smiled weakly and lifted her gaze. "Is there anything else you would like to know about my music?" Letting her thin fingers flutter over Erin's she momentarily wondered how joyful it was to run about as a normal teenager. Arabella had realized she could never indulge herself with the pleasures of teenagers as Erin could and became increasingly jealous of the girl before her. She didn't find it fair that she had to suffer while Erin ran around without a care in the world. Well, as long as Erin held her curiosity in check and didn't reach for her mask she was fine....for now.

Erin smiled. She noticed that Arabella seemed very emotional about the opera. It was probably very beautiful, and anything you worked on must mean so much to you. Erin figured Arabella felt this way for the same reason Erin had cried when she took a bow at her first performance onstage. She didn't suspect Arabella's disability, not yet at least. Erin could be quite oblivious to what was right in front of her. Well, she would probably find out soon enough, but for now she was totally oblivious, the way young teenage girls can be.
"Hmmm. Well, what is your favorite song that you've written?" Erin asked. The wording seemed awkward, but, well, it was clear what she meant. Erin couldn't write songs well. She'd tried, but the notes and lyrics never seemed to sound right to what Erin wanted to portray. Anyway, having never been in love, love songs were off. Erin wondered if Arabella had a boyfriend. Some part of her doubted it. She seemed like more of a loner. But even if Arabella did, Erin didn't really want to ask. That would be a totally inappropriate and personal question. Erin looked at Arabella, waiting for a response.

Arabella smiled gently and shifted through her pages. "Iris." It was indeed the same song the Goo Goo Dolls sang but revised to fit Arabella's style, therefor it was her own. It had the same lyrics, just a different tune. A softer, more emotional tone. Her fingers lightly traced the keys on her piano and she sucked in a small breath. She pressed down lightly, hearing the first few notes ring out. Playing the song softly she let her voice drift out to sing along. Slightly embarassed she blushed lightly, a soft pink color stainging her pale cheeks...or rather cheek.
She turned the piano off and stood to place it on her desk. She took out all her folders, about 13 of them and just opened the cover. They were all sheets of music, written by her since she was 9. She hadn't bothered to count how many songs and small tunes she had written, she had so much free time to just sit and despair in her lonliness. Looking out the window she saw the last splashes of color as the sun set. "It's getting late." Her stomach twisted into knots and she calmly walked over and grabbed a nightgown from her dresser.
She stood at her dresser, staring at the cosmetics covering the entire surface. She swallowed hard and looked back at Erin. She didn't seem to even notice her mask. Licking her dry lips she turned away and clutched the fabric of her nightgown. Her fingers traced the smooth curves of the phantom mask and she began to tremble. Would she scream?

Erin glanced at the room's boring black clock. Dang, Erin was going to have to do some serious work in here reguarding astetics. 10:00. Later than Erin had thought. She had to go to school tomorrow, so she couldn't afford to stay up too late. She took out her pajamas and headed up to the top bunk. She wasn't paying much attention to Arabella. Why would she? All Arabella was doing was removing that mask she had on. Erin had wondered about it, but figured it would be nosy to ask. She started to change under the covers while leaving her head above so she could look at the room.
((Sorry, not much muse right now.))

Arabella looked up and trembled seeing her reflection in the mirror. Tears welled in her eyes as her hand reached up to grasp the mask. It was no longer only about Erin, it was her own thoughts about her hideous face. She hated herself, thought of herself as a grotesque monster. Slipping the mask off, her deformity was revealed and tears spilled over to roll down her face. The mask slipped from her hand and clattered on the floor. She stared at herself, unmoving her gaze and tears pouring down her pale face. She was far from lovely or beautiful, she was monsterous.
