Erin watched Arabella take off her mask, she wondered if there was something weird under it, but even with that small bit of supposition that this was coming, nothing could stop her from letting out a loud gasp. Erin hadn't guessed how bad it would look. Anyway, Erin had guessed that she was wrong and looked perfectly normal. She should have guessed otherwise. Arabella was like the girl from the opera. Why hadn't Erin guessed?
Oh, shoot, Erin thought after the realization kicked in. Erin probably offended Arabella by gasping. She considered apologizing, but she didn't want to say anything to make it worse. Erin bit her lip and quietly pulled on her pajama bottoms. She would simply pretend that she hadn't noticed the deformity. Maybe then Arabella would realize it was okay. Erin tried not to judge people with disabilities. She hoped Arabella would be okay.

"I'm sorry I should have warned you." Her voice cracked as she wiped her eyes slowly. She looked away from the mirror, unable to gaze upon her hideous face any longer. It was the reason she hid her face from the world, why she wore that mask. No one would ever know about her depression, her lonliness. "It's hideous I know, I'm very sorry." Erin's loud gasp was expected, but at least she didn't scream. This wasn't the worst she had looked, if anything it would be the closest her face would look to normal. She sighed and tried to stop the flow of tears. Crawling into her bunk Phantom jumped up with her and mewed softly.

"Oh no. It's okay. I was just caught off guard. You know?" Erin asked. "But really, you're not a monster. It's not your fault. You didn't ask to be this way." Erin's mouth was going faster than her brain, but everything she said seemed legitimate, so Erin didn't try to stop herself until she thought she'd talked long enough. She looked at Arabella again. She was far from beautiful, but she was no horror movie monster. There was no way she could be. No amount of concealer could make one of them look normal.

[blockequote]Arabella smiled and looked up at Erin. "Thank you, that's very sweet of you to say." She knew she was far from beautiful and reminded herself of it everyday. she crawled under the covers and sighed, sliding her pale fingers over her deformation. If only she had been perfect, like Erin. If only she was born normal. "Now you see why I hide myself so." And why I don't have friends. She added to herself silently. She didn't trust anyone to get to close to her, she wasn't the kind of person that conversed easily. She was more poetic while others were all talk. [/blockquote]

Erin nodded. "Yes, I see. Well, I'm glad you were able to show me, in any case," she said. Well, not like Arabella had much of a choice. Sleeping with that mask on would probably lead to worse rumors going around the school. "I won't tell anyone," Erin added. Well, that was kind of a no-brainer, but Erin thought she ought ot make that very clear, so Arabella knew that she could trust Erin.
Erin yawned loudly. In her surprise, she'd forgotten that she was exhausted. It had been a long day for poor Erin. She'd gotten up early to finish packing, headed to the airport at nine, discovered her flight had been delayed until noon, gone through a turbulent flight unaccompanied, arrived at two in the afternoon, had to take a train to get from New York City to Minute Hill, then had to do a stupid orientation. Hello? She'd been here last year. School started tomorrow at eight. Sounded like torture to Erin. "Well, I'm tired. Good night." With that, Erin pulled on the string to the lamp and went to sleep.

Arabella smiled to herself and laid down. "Thank you" She whispered to Erin as she clicked the light off. Darkness submerged the room in a comforting hold and Arabella closed her eyes, happy to have peace at last.
